How to install the app on your phone or tablet

When to use this

You want Spall to open like a real app, its own icon on your home screen, full screen with no browser address bar or tabs around it, and (on iPhone or iPad) you want push notifications to actually work.

Before you start

Installing doesn’t create a new account or a new copy of your data, it’s the same Spall you already sign into in a browser, just launched a different way. You still sign in the first time you open the installed app.

Steps, Android or desktop Chrome/Edge

  1. Open Spall in Chrome or Edge and sign in.
  2. A small banner appears at the bottom of the screen with an Install Spall button, tap it. If you dismissed the banner before, or don’t see it, open the browser’s own menu instead and look for Add to Home Screen or Install app.
  3. Confirm the install prompt your browser shows. Spall now has its own icon, on your home screen or in your app list, and opens full screen from now on.

Steps, iPhone or iPad

  1. Open Spall in Safari and sign in. Installing only works from Safari, other iPhone/iPad browsers (even ones that look like Chrome or Firefox) can’t add a website to your home screen.
  2. A small banner at the bottom of the screen hints at this: tap Share, then Add to Home Screen. If you don’t see the banner, tap the Share icon in Safari’s toolbar yourself and find Add to Home Screen in the list.
  3. Confirm the name and tap Add. Spall now has its own icon on your home screen and opens full screen, no Safari address bar or tabs, from now on.

Notes

  • The bottom banner only shows up until you either install the app or dismiss it, tap the X to dismiss. It won’t come back on that device once you’ve installed, and it stays dismissed once you’ve closed it, even across visits.
  • On iPhone or iPad, push notifications only work from the installed app, never from a Safari tab, no matter how you’ve configured your notification preferences. Install first, then see How to enable push notifications on your phone or tablet.
  • Not sure it worked? Open the app from the icon you added, if it fills the whole screen with no address bar or browser tabs, you’re running the installed app.
  • The installed app shows its own back and forward arrows at the top left, use them to retrace your steps, since there’s no browser back button in the installed app. In a regular browser tab those arrows stay hidden and you use the browser’s own controls as usual.
