How to enable push notifications on your phone or tablet
Wiki: Admin concepts, Notification preferences
When to use this
You want an alert to reach you on your phone or tablet’s lock screen, the same way a text message or app notification would, without having Spall open in front of you.
Before you start
Push notifications only work from the installed app (added to your Home Screen), not a browser tab. On iPhone or iPad, this needs iOS 16.4 or later, and only ever works from the installed app, never from Safari in the browser. On Android, install Spall from your browser’s “Add to Home Screen” or “Install app” prompt first.
Steps
- Install Spall to your device’s home screen if you haven’t already, see How to install the app on your phone or tablet.
- Open the installed app (not a browser tab) and sign in.
- Go to Notifications on the Settings page, or straight to Notification Settings (
/notification-settings). - Scroll to the Push notifications card and tap Enable on this device.
- Your browser asks for permission to send notifications, allow it. If you’ve blocked notifications for Spall before, you’ll need to turn them back on in your browser or system settings first, then try again.
- Your device now appears in the list below, named after your device type (for example “iPhone” or “Android phone”). Rename it if you want something more specific, especially useful if you’re enabling this on more than one device, so you can tell your phone apart from your tablet.
Notes
- Push notifications carry the same alert content your notification bell already shows, nothing new or different is sent to your device.
- Tapping a notification opens the exact thing it’s about: an andon alert opens its work item, a maintenance alert opens Maintenance, and a KPI or ML alert opens the node it’s about. An alert type this doesn’t recognize falls back to your notification feed instead of guessing.
- If your digest schedule (see notification preferences) is set to daily, turning push on here also adds a once a day push naming yesterday’s biggest loss and how many actions are still open on your line, timed with that digest. Tapping it opens the Daily Board scoped to your line. It follows the same quiet hours as every other push, so it never lands overnight. Turn it off the same way as every other push, Enable on this device off, or by changing your digest schedule.
- Not sure it’s working? Tap Send test next to a device in the list to send it one canned notification right away, without waiting for a real alert.
- You can enable push on more than one device at once, for example your phone and your tablet, each shows up separately in the list, and you can remove one without affecting the other.
- Removing a device from the list stops notifications there immediately. You can re-enable it any time by repeating these steps from that device.
- If your browser doesn’t support push notifications at all, the Enable on this device button won’t appear, a message explains why instead.
- This is one channel among several, see How to configure notification preferences for the rest: email, SMS, the tenant chat webhook, severity floor, quiet hours, and pausing everything at once.
